What Gaya orders

The whole shop ›

Gaya’s year runs on pilgrim seasons and winter sweets, and both bring steady demand for good dry fruits.

Tilkut and anarsa season

From December, the old bazaars of Gaya fill with the sound of tilkut being pounded. Families who make their own at home mix sesame with jaggery or sugar, and some add crushed Regular Badam to the filling. Safed Tilly (White Sesame Seeds) is the base, and it must be fresh, so buy it close to Makar Sankranti. Anarsa, made from rice flour and sesame, is the city’s other winter favourite.

Pitru Paksha guests

During the Pitru Paksha fair, lakhs of families come to Gaya to offer pind daan for their ancestors, and local homes host relatives for days at a time. A tin of Jumbo Cashew (Kaju) and a box of Kalmi Safawi Dates on the shelf makes that hosting easier. Some visitors also take Munakka Dakh Jumbo home as part of the prasad they share with family.

Bodh Gaya in winter

Monks and travellers from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Japan stay in Bodh Gaya through the winter. Guesthouse kitchens serving them often keep Pumpkin Seeds and walnuts for breakfast bowls with curd or porridge. The seeds collection lists them all with today’s price.

Gaya also has a large student population, with many young people preparing for competitive exams in rented rooms near the town centre. A jar of almonds, walnuts and raisins on the study table is a common sight in those rooms. Families from the town who move to Delhi, Kolkata or Patna for work often order a pack for their parents back home, and the courier brings it to the door in Gaya. Chhath here is celebrated on the Falgu river banks, and prasad baskets carry chhuhara and raisins.

A Gaya order usually reaches you in 4–6 days by courier, weighed to the gram and sealed airtight. The courier also reaches Bodh Gaya, Sherghati, Tekari and Jehanabad. Orders start at ₹1,000 and every order ships free. Payment is online only.
