Lohri and Maghi, Dogra style

Lohri is a big festival in Jammu, and Maghi follows. Families offer til, gur, Makhana (Fox Nut) and Walnut Whole to the fire, and khichdi on Maghi is served with ghee. The makhana collection is useful for the roasted snack plate.

Patisa and Dogri sweets

Patisa is a sweet that people strongly connect with Jammu, a layered, flaky sweet in the family of soan papdi, topped with sliced pistachio. At home, Pista Katran and Roasted Pistachio work in the same way for barfi and kheer. Dogri kheer for weddings uses Kishmis / Kishmish (Lambi Dakh) and jumbo badam (almonds).

Pilgrim season and gifting

Katra at the base of the Trikuta hills gets crowds all year, and Navratri weeks are the busiest. Visitors usually carry home sealed packs from the city, and local families gift a dry fruit gift box to relatives for Diwali and for engagements.

Hot summers, cold nights. Jammu is hot and humid in June, with a damp monsoon, then pleasantly cold from December. Keep nuts in sealed jars in summer and out of the sun.

Delivery

A Jammu order usually reaches you in 3–5 days by courier, weighed to the gram and sealed airtight. Katra, Samba, Udhampur and Kathua are also covered. Orders start at ₹1,000 and every order ships free. Payment is online only.

Where the valley meets the plains. Walnuts and almonds are grown in the hills of the region, so people in Jammu know the taste of local nuts well and compare them with what they buy. Army families, government employees who move with the Durbar between Srinagar and Jammu, and traders on Raghunath Bazaar all shop for dry fruits before the cold months. Dogri weddings include a traditional dham feast, where rice, rajma and a sweet dish arrive on a leaf plate. For Diwali, families send boxes to relatives in other cities, and a sealed pack travels easily in a train bag, and winter orders from the hills of the region are usually settled before the first snow cuts the roads.
