Quick answer
For most adults, the answer to how many pistachios to eat per day is one handful: about 30 to 50 kernels, or 28 g, which is roughly 160 calories. Unsalted pista is the better daily choice. If you prefer salted, keep to the same handful, because the salt adds up quickly, and drink water with it.
What does one serving of pista look like?
A standard serving of nuts is one ounce, 28 g. Pistachios are small, so that one ounce is a generous handful, about 49 kernels by the usual count. In shell, it is roughly 56 g of nuts in their shells, because about half the weight is shell.
Here is how that compares with other nuts in the same 28 g serving:
| Nut | Pieces in 28 g (approx.) | Energy in 28 g (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Pista (kernels) | 45 to 50 | 160 kcal |
| Badam | 22 to 24 | 165 kcal |
| Kaju | 16 to 18 | 155 kcal |
| Akhrot (halves) | 12 to 14 | 185 kcal |
That is why pista is popular with people watching their portions: you get more pieces for the same calories. The figures come from USDA FoodData Central, which lists pistachios at about 560 kcal per 100 g. Our calories in dry fruits table has the rest of the shelf.
How many salted pistachios per day is sensible?
The same handful, but with more thought about the rest of your day’s salt. Plain pistachios have almost no sodium. Salted, dry-roasted pistachios carry several hundred milligrams of sodium per 100 g, depending on how heavily they are salted, so a 28 g handful adds a little over 100 mg.
- One handful of salted pista a day fits comfortably into most diets.
- Eating straight from a large bag is where the salt creeps up, because two handfuls become five.
- If you have been advised to cut salt, choose plain kernels and speak to your doctor about nuts in general.
In-shell salted pista slows you down, because every nut has to be opened. Many people find that is the easiest portion control of all. More on salted options on our roasted and salted nuts page.

These are common household portions, not medical advice. Children’s needs vary, so check with your paediatrician for very young children.
| Who | Daily amount | Form |
|---|---|---|
| Children 3 to 6 | 8 to 10 kernels | Chopped or powdered in milk, never whole for toddlers |
| Children 7 to 12 | 15 to 20 kernels | Whole, plain |
| Teenagers | 25 to 35 kernels | Whole, plain or lightly salted |
| Adults | 30 to 50 kernels | Plain, or salted in moderation |
| Elders | 20 to 30 kernels | Plain, chopped if chewing is hard |
When is the best time to eat pista?
Whenever it replaces something less useful. Many people keep a small box of pista for the mid-morning or 4 pm slump, in place of biscuits or namkeen. A few kernels in a glass of warm milk at night is an old habit in many homes, and pista katran over kheer or poha in the morning is another.
The one rule worth keeping: count out your handful into a small bowl rather than eating from the pack. A small steel katori holds almost exactly one serving of kernels, so it doubles as a measure. For office days, fill a small box with the day’s portion in the morning and leave the big jar at home. Pista eaten slowly, with a cup of tea or after a walk, is far more satisfying than the same amount eaten absent-mindedly in front of a screen.
Which pista should you buy for daily eating?
- Pista kernels for the daily box. Already shelled, easy to count.
- Roasted pistachios in shell for snacking, where the shelling helps you slow down.
- Pista katran for adding to milk, kheer and breakfast.

How long does a pack last a family?
Two adults eating 40 kernels each a day use about 1.4 kg of kernels a month at that full handful, or close to a kilo at a smaller, 25-kernel habit. Most households land between 250 g and 500 g a month, because pista is one of several nuts on rotation.
A balanced monthly basket is 500 g kaju, 500 g badam and 250 g pista kernels, with a pack of roasted in-shell pista for guests; orders start at ₹1,000 and every order ships free. Keep kernels in an airtight jar, and in the fridge if you buy more than a month’s worth. The whole range is in our pistachio collection.

Questions people ask
How much pista should I eat a day?
About one 28 g handful, which is 30 to 50 kernels for most adults. That gives roughly 160 calories. If you are managing weight or a health condition, speak to your doctor about the right amount for you.
Is it OK to eat pistachios every day?
For most healthy adults, a daily handful of plain pistachios fits well into a balanced diet. Keep salted pista occasional or within the same handful. People with a nut allergy should avoid them altogether.
Are salted pistachios bad for you?
Not in a small handful, but salted pista adds sodium that plain pista does not. If you eat a lot of salty food already, or have been asked to cut salt, choose plain kernels.
Should pista be soaked before eating?
There is no need. Pista is soft enough to eat as is, and soaking makes it limp and dulls its colour and flavour. Badam and anjeer are the dry fruits that gain from soaking.
