Quick answer

Dry fruit gets talked about as one category, and on sugar it is really two. The nuts carry almost none. The dried fruits carry a great deal, because drying removes the water and leaves the sugar behind in a much smaller piece. Knowing which side an item sits on is most of what anyone needs here.

Where does the shelf divide?

Almost no sugar A lot of sugar
Badam, kaju, pista, akhrot Khajur, anjeer, kishmish, munakka
Chilgoza, hazelnut, pecan Dried apricot, prunes, cranberry
Alsi, chia, magaj, sunflower Any candied or coated fruit
Makhana Chuara and kharak

The left column is fat and protein with very little carbohydrate. The right is concentrated fruit sugar. Neither is a problem by itself and both are ordinary food, but a handful from one column and a handful from the other are not remotely the same thing.

Which is the lowest of all?

Makhana, on a per-serving basis, and by a distance. It weighs almost nothing when puffed, so a generous bowl is a small weight of food, and what is in it is mostly starch rather than sugar. It runs at today's shop rate at our counter today and is the one thing here that can be eaten by the bowl rather than the handful.

Among the nuts, pista and akhrot sit lowest, with almonds close behind. Pista runs at today's shop rate today on the pista price page. Cashew carries a little more carbohydrate than the others, which is worth knowing but is not a reason to avoid it.

Are dried fruits worse than fresh ones?

Per gram, yes, and the reason is arithmetic rather than anything added. A grape is mostly water; take the water out and you are left with a raisin that is a quarter of the weight and carries the same sugar. Eating ten raisins is closer to eating ten grapes than it looks, except that ten raisins take ten seconds.

The practical consequence is about portion rather than avoidance. Two dates after a meal is a normal thing to eat. A handful of dates while watching something is a lot of sugar in one go, and nobody counts them.

There is a middle group worth naming, because it gets argued about. Chuara, kharak and the firmer dates are drier than kimia or medjool, so a piece weighs less and carries less sugar with it, but they are still fruit and still sweet. Treating them as a low-sugar option because they are hard rather than sticky is a mistake people make regularly.

What should you watch on a label?

  • Added sugar. Cranberry is always sweetened, and a lot of dried mango and pineapple is too.
  • Coatings. Anything glossy, coloured or candied is sugar on top of fruit sugar.
  • Mixed packs. A trail mix is usually half raisin by weight, which makes it a sweet thing however many nuts are pictured.
  • Roasted and masala items, which are usually salt rather than sugar, and are a separate question.

The mixed-pack point catches most people. Raisins are the cheapest way to fill a mix by weight, so the cheaper the mix, the more of it is raisin. If a bowl of mixed nuts is meant to be the low-sugar option, build it yourself from the nuts shelf rather than buying it ready-mixed.

How should a household buy on this basis?

Two jars rather than one, and keep them apart. A nut jar for snacking, where the quantity does not matter much, and a small jar of dates or figs for after a meal, where two is the serving. Households that keep one big mixed jar end up eating the sweet half fastest, every time.

And one honest caveat: how much sugar is right for any particular person is a doctor’s question, not a shop’s, especially where blood sugar is being watched. What we can tell you is what is in each item and what a normal portion looks like. Our orders start at ₹1,000 and every order ships free, so two separate jars cost no more to order than one. Today’s figures for the whole shelf are on the shop page, and the dried fruit side is on the dry fruits page.

Questions people ask

Which dry fruit has the least sugar?

Makhana per serving, because it weighs so little. Among nuts, pista, akhrot and almonds are lowest, and all the nuts are far below any dried fruit.

Do dates have more sugar than sweets?

Per gram they are comparable, but dates bring fibre and minerals with it where a sweet brings neither. The portion is what differs in practice.

Is there unsweetened dried cranberry?

Very rarely, because the fruit is too sour to eat without sweetening. Assume any red berry in a shop has had sugar added.

Are roasted nuts higher in sugar?

No, roasting adds none. Masala and coated versions add salt and sometimes a little sugar, so plain roasted is the simpler buy. Today’s rates are on the makhana price page and across the shop.
