Quick answer

Dried cranberries are small red cranberries that have been dried until chewy, almost always after being soaked in sugar syrup, because fresh cranberries are too sour to eat on their own. They taste sweet-tart, like a sharper kishmish, and are used in trail mix, salads, muesli and baking. Dried blueberries are similar, but milder and naturally sweeter.

The most useful thing to know before buying is that “cranberry dry fruit” in India almost always means the sweetened kind. That is not a trick; it is simply how the fruit is made edible. But it matters if you are watching sugar, and it is why we think of berries as an occasional sweet and a garnish rather than a daily handful.

What is cranberry dry fruit?

Cranberry dry fruit is the dried berry of the cranberry plant (Vaccinium macrocarpon), a low shrub grown mainly in North America, usually infused with sugar before drying. Cranberries do not grow in India, so every pack sold here is imported.

Fresh cranberries are hard, bright red and very sour, with little natural sugar. Dried as they are, they would be puckeringly tart. So the usual method is to slice or prick the berries, soak them in sugar syrup so the sweetness moves in, and then dry them. A light coat of vegetable oil is often added so the berries do not stick together in the pack.

Sweetened dried vs plain: what is the difference?

Sweetened dried cranberries have been infused with sugar before drying, while plain (unsweetened) ones are dried with nothing added and taste very sour. Almost all dried cranberries sold anywhere are the sweetened kind. Unsweetened ones exist, but are hard to find and most people find them too sharp to snack on.

Standard food composition tables put sweetened dried cranberries at about 300 kcal per 100 g, with most of that coming from sugar. That is similar to raisins, not to fresh fruit. If you have diabetes or are watching sugar for any reason, ask your doctor how dried berries fit your diet, and treat them as a sweet, not a free snack.

If you want a dried fruit with nothing added for everyday eating, kishmish, dates and anjeer are the plainer choice. Our guide to kishmish, munakka and dakh explains those.

What are dried blueberries like?

Dried blueberries are small, wrinkled, dark blue berries with a soft, chewy bite and a gentle, jammy sweetness. They are less sour than cranberries, so they are the easier berry for children and for anyone who finds cranberries too sharp.

Like cranberries, blueberries are imported, and many dried blueberries are also sweetened. They are at their best in baking and breakfast: stirred into muffin or pancake batter, sprinkled on oats or muesli, or folded into yoghurt. Our Blueberry sits beside the cranberries on the Berry shelf.

How do you use dried cranberries?

Use dried cranberries anywhere you would use kishmish but want a brighter colour and a tart edge: in trail mix, salads, muesli, baking and even some pulao. A small handful goes a long way.

  • Trail mix: mix with almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds and a few blueberries. The red and blue make an ordinary nut jar look inviting. Our Trial Mix with 12 Nuts & Dry Fruits is a ready version.
  • Salads: scatter over green salads, sprout salads or a fruit chaat with some toasted walnuts or seeds.
  • Breakfast: stir into oats, muesli or yoghurt.
  • Baking: in cookies, muffins, cakes and granola bars, often with white chocolate or orange zest.
  • Rice: a spoonful in a festive pulao, where you might otherwise use kishmish.
  • Gift boxes: a small section of red berries brightens a tray of pale nuts.

A baking tip: toss dried berries in a spoon of flour before folding them into batter, so they do not sink. If they are very dry, soak them in warm water or juice for ten minutes and pat them dry first.

What about dried strawberries and red cherries?

Dried strawberries and the red cherries sold in dry fruit shops are sweeter, softer relatives of the berries above, and they are mostly used for colour and decoration. Both are usually made with added sugar.

  • Strawberry: dried strawberry pieces are sweet and chewy, and good in muesli, on cakes and in children’s snack boxes.
  • Red Cherries: the glossy red cherries sold for cakes and desserts are preserved in sugar, which is what makes them soft and bright. Use them for decorating a cake, a fruit custard or a dry fruit tray.

How should you store dried berries?

Store dried cranberries, blueberries and other berries in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, and move them to the fridge in hot, humid weather. Sugar-infused berries keep well, usually for several months, but they can dry out and harden in an open pack, or turn sticky in monsoon humidity.

If berries have gone hard, a short soak in warm water softens them for baking. Throw away any that smell sour or fermented, or show any fuzz.

Questions people ask

Are dried cranberries the same as cranberry dry fruit?

Yes. Both names mean cranberries that have been dried, and in India they are almost always the sweetened kind.

Why do dried cranberries have added sugar?

Fresh cranberries are very sour and low in natural sugar. Soaking them in syrup before drying is what makes them pleasant to eat.

Can people with diabetes eat dried cranberries?

Sweetened dried cranberries are high in sugar, so ask your doctor first. If they are allowed, keep portions small and count them as a sweet.

Which is sweeter, dried blueberry or dried cranberry?

Dried blueberries taste milder and sweeter. Dried cranberries are sweet too, but keep a sharp, tart edge.

Can children eat dried cranberries?

Yes, in small amounts, as a sweet treat. For very young children, chop them, as small chewy pieces can be hard to manage.
