Quick answer
The best dates gift box usually holds Medjool for size and softness, Ajwa for a recipient who values its religious meaning, or Kalmi (Safawi) for someone who eats khajur every day. Medjool looks the most generous, Ajwa carries the most sentiment, and Kalmi is the easiest to enjoy. Mixing two varieties in one box covers most tastes.
How do Medjool, Ajwa and Kalmi dates differ?
They differ in size, texture and in what they mean to the person opening the box. All three are soft, ready-to-eat dates, but nobody mistakes one for another once they have tasted them side by side.
| Variety | Size and look | Taste and texture | Send it to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medjool | Large, 20 to 25 g each, amber to dark brown, wrinkled skin | Very soft, caramel and honey, almost fudge-like | Clients, in-laws, anyone you want to impress |
| Ajwa | Small to medium, near black, fine wrinkles | Dry-soft, mild, less sugary, a little prune-like | Muslim friends and colleagues, elders, Ramzan and Eid gifting |
| Kalmi or Safawi | Long, slim, dark brown to black | Soft, sweet, slightly chewy, easy to eat several | Families with children, gym-goers, daily khajur eaters |
A single Medjool is a snack on its own. Ajwa comes from Madinah and is valued for its association with the Prophet, which is why it is the date many families keep for Iftar and for elders. Kalmi is the crowd pleaser. Our Medjool dates guide and Ajwa dates guide go deeper into each.
How many dates fit in a gift box?
It depends on the box and the variety, because Medjool takes up two or three times the room of an Ajwa. As a rough guide for our shapes:
- Peacock Mahal, the two-jar keepsake box: one jar of Medjool and one of Ajwa or Kalmi works well, roughly 15 to 20 Medjool in one jar.
- Ivory Damask, the twin window box: two varieties side by side behind the window, so the colour difference shows.
- Golden Heritage, the five-compartment tray: dates in one or two compartments with kaju, badam and pista around them.
For a family of four, 400 to 500 g of dates is a generous gift. For one elder, 250 g of Ajwa is plenty.
Who should not get a box of only dates?
Someone who is watching their sugar. Dates are dried fruit, and most of their weight is natural sugar: USDA FoodData Central lists Medjool at about 66 g of sugars per 100 g. That is useful energy for a fasting day or a long workout, but a whole box of them is the wrong gift for a recipient managing diabetes, and the family will know it.
For that person, choose a nuts-led box instead: badam, akhrot, kaju and pista, with perhaps a small compartment of Ajwa as a gesture. If you are unsure about a recipient’s health, a mixed box is the safe choice, and they can speak to their doctor about how much of each suits them.
Which occasions suit a khajur gift box?
Dates travel well, keep for weeks without a fridge and look festive in a window box, so they work for more occasions than people expect:
- Diwali and Dhanteras visits, as a sweet that is not mithai.
- Ramzan and Eid, where Ajwa or Medjool is the natural choice.
- Corporate gifting to a mixed team, because dates suit every community and diet.
- Housewarming and wedding gifts, often with a jar of badam alongside.
- Thank-you gifts to a doctor or a teacher, in a smaller box.

What makes a dates gift feel premium rather than ordinary?
Three things: the variety, the box and the card. Medjool or Ajwa signals care in a way that loose khajur does not. A keepsake box with a window or jars gets kept long after the dates are gone.
Questions people ask
Is a Medjool dates gift box worth it?
For a client or an in-law you want to impress, yes. Medjool is the largest and softest date most people will have tasted, and fifteen of them in a jar look generous in a way small dates cannot.
What goes in an Ajwa dates gift pack?
Usually 250 to 500 g of Ajwa on its own, because the recipient values it for its meaning. Some families add a jar of Medjool or badam beside it for variety.
How long do dates in a gift box keep?
Soft dates keep four to six weeks at room temperature in a cool place, and two to three months in the fridge. Tell the recipient to move them to the fridge once opened in humid weather.
Can I mix dates and nuts in one khajur gift box?
Yes, and most people do. A five-compartment tray with two kinds of dates and three nuts suits nearly every household, including members who do not eat much sugar.
