Quick answer
A thoughtful Karva Chauth gift for your wife is a small sargi tray of dry fruits she will actually eat before the fast: soaked Mamra badam, two or three anjeer, a few soft dates and some walnut halves. Set it up the night before, so the only thing to do before dawn is put it on the plate.
Here is what goes on that plate, how much, and what else makes a good dry fruit gift for the day.
What sargi is
Karva Chauth is kept across North India, and Delhi households keep it widely. It comes in autumn, a little before Diwali. Married women fast from before sunrise until the moon is seen at night, and in many homes they fast without water too.
Sargi is the meal eaten before dawn to begin the fast. Traditionally the mother-in-law sends it, though in many Delhi households now the husband or the woman herself puts it together, especially where the family lives in a flat in Noida or Gurugram and the mother-in-law is in another city.
A typical sargi plate carries some sweet and some savoury things. Many Punjabi families include pheni cooked in milk, mathri, fresh fruit, coconut water and sweets from the local halwai, along with the shringar items for the evening. Those are not things we sell. The dry fruits are the part we can help with.
Dry fruits for the sargi plate, and how much
The fast is long, so the plate should be filling but not so heavy that it sits badly at four in the morning. For one person, this is a sensible amount:
| Dry fruit | For one plate | How to serve |
|---|---|---|
| Badam | 6–8 | Soaked overnight, peeled |
| Anjeer | 2–3 | Soaked overnight |
| Dates | 2–4 | As they are |
| Akhrot | 2–3 halves | As they are |
| Kishmish or munakka | A small spoonful | Soaked overnight |
| Kaju | 4–5 | As they are |
If she has diabetes, is pregnant, or has any health condition, ask a doctor about both the fast and what to eat at sargi. Dates and anjeer are sweet, and a doctor may suggest a different balance.
What to soak the night before
- Badam. Soak in water overnight, then peel. Mamra Badam is the one many families prefer for soaking; it is smaller and richer than a Californian almond. Our guide on Mamra or Californian almonds explains the difference.
- Anjeer. Two or three pieces of Jumbo Anjeer in a small bowl of water turn soft and easy to eat by morning. Some people drink the soaking water too.
- Kishmish or munakka. A spoonful soaked overnight plumps up and is gentle to eat early.
Walnuts, dates and cashews do not need soaking. Put them on the plate as they are.
Dry fruit gift ideas for Karva Chauth
Many husbands now give a gift on the evening itself. Dry fruits are a practical choice, because they are used the next morning and the weeks after, and they suit a family that is already buying sweets for Diwali.
- A sargi tray for the morning. Soaked badam, anjeer, dates and walnuts, arranged on a steel or brass plate you already have.
- A pack of premium dates. Medjool Dates are large and soft, and a 500 g pack lasts well past the day.
- A trio of good nuts. Mamra badam, Walnut Kernels and anjeer, put together in a basket or box you buy locally. Most families build the plate from our packs, and custom gift boxes can be arranged with us on WhatsApp.
- A small mukhwas pack for after the evening meal. Once the fast is broken, it rounds off dinner nicely.
