Quick answer
Red berry, cranberry and dried cranberry all turn up as separate lines on price lists, and in nearly every shop in India they are the same product. What differs between one lot and the next is not the fruit. It is how much sugar went in before it was dried, and that is where the rate comes from.
What does dried cranberry cost?
At our counter it is at today's shop rate a pack, read off the shop as this page loads. Worked out per kilo it sits in the middle of the dry fruit shelf — above raisins, well below any nut — which surprises people who assume an imported berry must be expensive.
It is imported, almost all of it, mainly from North America where the berry is farmed in flooded bogs and harvested by the tonne. Scale keeps the rate down. What pushes individual lots up or down is the processing that happens afterwards.
Why is every dried cranberry sweetened?
Because a cranberry on its own is too sour to eat. Unlike a grape or a fig, it has almost no sugar of its own, so the fruit is infused with syrup before drying or it would be inedible. Every red berry you have eaten from a packet has been through this, including the ones sold without the word on the label.
| What to look at | Better lot | Poorer lot |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Deep red, slightly uneven | Bright, even, almost glossy |
| Feel | Supple, a little tacky | Wet, sticky, berries clumped |
| Taste | Sour underneath the sweetness | Sweet only, no sourness left |
| Size | Plump, whole berries | Flat, split, many halves |
The taste test is the useful one. A good dried cranberry still tastes of cranberry after the sugar; a poor one tastes like a sweet. If the sourness has gone entirely, you are paying fruit prices for syrup.
What is it actually good for?
- Baking, where the sourness survives the oven and cuts through a sweet batter.
- Muesli and curd, where it does the job raisins do but with an edge.
- Salads, particularly with something salty, where the contrast is the point.
- A gift tray, where the red is the only strong colour on an otherwise brown board.
That last use is why most of it moves in October. A tray of kaju, badam, anjeer and khajur is five shades of the same brown, and a handful of red berries changes the whole thing. The gift boxes on the gifting page nearly all have a compartment doing exactly that job.
Is it worth buying over raisins?
For eating by the handful, that is a matter of taste and most households end up keeping both. For cooking, raisins are cheaper and behave more predictably — they run at today's shop rate at our counter today, with the grades set out on the kishmish price page. Where cranberry earns its place is anywhere the dish is already sweet and needs something working against it.
A practical note on quantity: it is not an item to buy a kilo of. The sugar makes it clump as it ages, and a large pack that has been opened and closed through a humid month turns into one solid block. A quarter kilo at a time, kept sealed and cool, stays loose and usable. Our orders start at ₹1,000 and every order ships free, so a small pack normally travels with the month’s nuts rather than alone.
How should it be stored?
Sealed, cool and out of the light, like any dried fruit, but with one extra caution. Cranberry carries more added sugar than anything else on the shelf, and sugar draws moisture, so it is the first thing to go sticky in the monsoon. Keep it in glass with a tight lid rather than the pouch it arrived in, and in a coastal city keep it in the fridge.
Stored properly it will hold for three months without hardening. The rest of the dried fruit shelf, with today’s figures beside each pack, is on the dry fruits page.
Questions people ask
Is red berry the same as cranberry?
In an Indian dry fruit shop, almost always yes. A few shops use red berry for dried barberry, which is smaller and much more sour, so ask if the berries look tiny.
Why does dried cranberry have sugar in it?
Because the fruit has almost none of its own and is too sour to eat otherwise. Every commercially dried cranberry is sweetened, whether or not the packet says so.
What is the price of 1 kg dried cranberry?
Mid range for a dried fruit — more than raisins, less than any nut. The live figure is printed above and moves with the shop.
Can cranberry be used instead of raisins in cooking?
Yes, with a caveat: it is more sour and will change the balance of a sweet dish. Use a little less than the recipe asks for raisins. The whole shelf with today’s rates is on the shop page.
