Quick answer
Combo packs sell well for an obvious reason: one decision instead of six, one price instead of six, and something arrives that looks like a month of dry fruit. Whether it is a good buy depends almost entirely on four things the listing usually does not mention.
What does a combo pack usually leave out?
- The split. Four kilos sounds generous until you find three of them are raisins and makhana and the kaju is a token hundred grams.
- The grade of each item, which is where the whole rate comes from.
- Whether the weights are net or include the jars and the box they came in.
- When each item was packed, which varies across a combo because the items were not packed together.
The first one does most of the damage. A combo is priced on total weight, and the cheapest way to hit a headline weight is with the cheapest item in the box. A pack that is half raisin by weight is not a dry fruit assortment, it is raisins with garnish.
How do you work out whether a combo is cheaper?
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Write down the net grams of each item in the combo |
| 2 | Look up each item’s own per-kilo rate |
| 3 | Multiply and add |
| 4 | Compare that total with the combo price |
It takes two minutes and it settles the question properly. More often than not the combo is a little cheaper than the sum, and sometimes considerably dearer, and you cannot tell which from the photograph. Every item’s live per-kilo figure is on the shop page, so step two is quick.
When is a combo the right buy?
Three cases, and they are all about variety rather than value.
First, when you do not yet know what your household actually eats. Buying six items in small quantities tells you in a month what guessing tells you in a year, and the leftover jars are a cheap education. Our trial mix exists for exactly this and is at today's shop rate a pack.
Second, an office drawer or a desk at work, where variety is the whole point and nobody is cooking with any of it. Third, a gift, where the box is being given as one object and splitting it into six packets defeats the purpose — the boxes on the gifting page do that job properly.
When should you buy separately instead?
Whenever you already know what you get through. A household that soaks almonds every morning and makes kaju gravies twice a week wants half a kilo of one and a quarter of the other, not a sixth of each of six things. Buying to your own pattern means you run out of the right item rather than ending up with four jars you never open.
Separately is also better for anything that turns fast. A combo sits in the cupboard being eaten item by item over two or three months, and the walnut kernels in it will be past their best long before the raisins are finished. Kaju runs at today's shop rate at our counter today and is on the kaju price page pack by pack, which is the way to buy it if you use a lot.
One more case, which is the gift list that has tiers in it. Close family and senior clients want a box; the wider list is perfectly happy with a sensible assortment. Buying one middling combo for everybody costs more than buying two different things and lands worse at both ends.
What about the very large combos?
The four and five kilo packs that appear around festivals are almost always weight-led. Work the arithmetic above on one and the picture is usually the same: most of the kilos are in the cheapest two items, the expensive items are in token quantities, and the headline figure is doing the selling.
If what you want is a large order rather than a large box, build it from the items you actually use. Our orders start at ₹1,000 and every order ships free, so there is no advantage to padding an order to reach a threshold. The whole shelf is on the dry fruits page.
Questions people ask
Are dry fruit combo packs cheaper than buying separately?
Sometimes. Work out the net grams of each item against its own per-kilo rate and compare. It takes two minutes and gives a real answer rather than an impression.
What should a good combo contain?
A sensible split rather than a big number. Four items in useful quantities beats eight in token ones, and the expensive items should not be the smallest packets.
Do combo packs stay fresh?
Only if each item is sealed separately. A single large box with everything loose in compartments goes stale faster, and the oily items go first.
Is a combo a good gift?
As a gift box with compartments, yes. As a plastic bag of six pouches, it reads as a shop order rather than a present.
