Quick answer
On Bhai Phota, sisters put the phonta of chandan, kajal and curd on their brother’s forehead, bless him with dhaan and durba, feed him mishti and give a gift, usually new clothes. A popular bhai phota gift today is a dry fruit box that sits beside the sandesh, outlasts the sweets and travels to another city.
What is Bhai Phota?
Bhai Phota, or Bhai Phonta, is the Bengali form of Bhai Dooj, celebrated on the second lunar day after Kali Puja. It falls on Wednesday 11 November this year by most calendars; check your panjika for the exact tithi. Sisters often fast until the ritual is done, then apply the phonta and recite the old rhyme, “Bhaier kopale dilam phonta, Jomer duare porlo kanta”, wishing their brother a long life. The Wikipedia page on Bhai Dooj covers the regional forms of the festival, Bhai Phota among them.
In most Bengali homes, the day ends in a big lunch, with the brother as the guest of honour. Gifts go both ways: the sister gives one, and the brother brings one for her.
What goes on the Bhai Phota plate?
The thali, or bhai phota dala, is prepared in the morning. A typical plate holds:
- Chandan (sandalwood paste), kajal and curd, for the phonta on the forehead.
- Dhaan (paddy) and durba grass, placed on the brother’s head as a blessing.
- A ghee diya and a conch, blown as the phonta is given.
- Mishti: sandesh, rosogolla, or a few pieces from the neighbourhood sweet shop.
- A few dry fruits, often kaju and kishmish, beside the sweets.
- The gift itself, placed next to the plate.
What do sisters give brothers on Bhai Phota?
New clothes, a punjabi or a shirt, remain the classic gift. Beside them, sisters now often add something to eat that keeps, because the mishti is finished by evening. That is where a dry fruit box comes in.
| Brother | Gift that suits | Box and fill |
|---|---|---|
| Dada, the elder brother with a family | Something for the whole household | Porcelain Bloom, six compartments: kaju, badam, pista, anjeer, khajur, kishmish |
| Bhai, a younger brother in college or a first job | A box he can keep in a hostel or flat | Blue Paisley, three-jar carry case: kaju, roasted pista, almonds |
| A brother who works out or watches his diet | Unsweetened, protein-rich snacks | Hummingbird Garden, four compartments: almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, makhana |
| A cousin brother or a rakhi brother | A smaller, warm gesture | A lighter fill in any of the above |

Why does dry fruit work so well beside the mishti?
Bengali sweets are the heart of the day, and nothing replaces them. But they are made to be eaten within a day or two, and a brother who lives in Bangalore or Pune cannot carry a box of rosogolla home on a flight. Dry fruit fills the gap: it keeps for weeks, it needs no fridge, and it goes into the payesh and the bijoya sweets the family makes later. Many Kolkata households already keep kaju and kishmish for Durga Puja and Bijoya, as our Bijoya sweets and dry fruits post describes.
How do you send a Bhai Phota gift to another city?
Many Bengali families now have brothers and sisters spread across Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore and abroad. When the phonta has to be given over a video call, the gift should arrive before it.
- Pay online. Boxes are dispatched within three working days of the order being settled.
- Most cities receive them two to six days after dispatch. With Diwali and Kali Puja on 8 November, order by the end of October for a comfortable margin, and by 2 November at the latest for the big cities.
The card is printed in your words, so you can write the phonta rhyme itself, or a line in Bangla to your dada. Our Bhai Dooj gift delivery post works through the order-by dates day by day. For brothers in Kolkata, the buy dry fruits in Kolkata page has city details, and the Diwali gift hampers for Kolkata post covers the wider festive list.
What do brothers give their sisters back?
The return gift is part of the custom. Brothers usually give a sari, jewellery or cash in an envelope.
