Quick answer

In Chennai the festival is Deepavali, it begins with an oil bath before sunrise, and the gifts that matter are carried on visits rather than handed out at work. If you are looking at diwali gift hampers chennai families and offices give, the box has to sit comfortably beside the bakshanam, the thamboolam and the new clothes.

What does Deepavali look like in a Chennai home?

The day starts early. The Ganga snanam, an oil bath before dawn, comes first, then new clothes, crackers and a plate of bakshanam: murukku, athirasam, ribbon pakoda, mysore pak, badam halwa. Relatives drop in through the morning, and every guest leaves with thamboolam, the plate of betel, fruit and a small gift.

Dry fruit fits into this in two ways. It goes into the bakshanam itself, which our guide to dry fruits for Deepavali bakshanam covers in detail. And a small box of kaju and badam has become a popular thamboolam gift for close family, because it keeps and nobody has three of them already.

What is Thalai Deepavali, and what is gifted?

Thalai Deepavali is the first Deepavali after a wedding. The newly married couple spend it at the bride’s family home, and both families exchange gifts: clothes, silver, sweets and, increasingly, a proper dry fruit hamper for the groom’s parents and the elders on both sides. It is the occasion in the Tamil calendar where the box is kept long after the nuts are gone.

The Peacock Mahal is a two-jar keepsake box in a pink mahal print with a peacock inside the lid. It suits Thalai Deepavali: it goes to the in-laws, it is opened in front of the family, and the box itself stays on a shelf afterwards. Jumbo kaju and Mamra badam are the usual pair.

What do OMR, Guindy and Anna Salai offices order?

  • OMR, from Perungudi to Sholinganallur and Siruseri: IT and services companies with large teams, many of whom travel home to Madurai, Coimbatore or Tiruchi for the festival.
  • Guindy and the Olympia Tech Park belt: engineering firms, banks’ back offices and industrial units, gifting both staff and dealers.
  • Anna Salai and Nungambakkam: older head offices, auditors and law firms with a smaller, more senior list.
  • Ambattur and Sriperumbudur: manufacturing plants where shift workers receive boxes at the gate.

Because so many OMR employees leave Chennai in the festival week, the handover usually happens on the last working day before people board their trains and buses. Plan to that day, not to Deepavali itself.

How do you keep a box fresh through the northeast monsoon?

This is Chennai’s real challenge. The northeast monsoon usually sets in around the second half of October, and the city’s air is already heavy with moisture. Sealed jars are fine; damp cartons are not. A few habits help:

  • Have cartons brought indoors the day they arrive, never left at a gate or in a ground-floor store that floods.
  • Keep them off the floor and away from the walls of the store room.
  • Recipients should keep jars tightly shut, with akhrot and pista in the fridge once opened.
  • Every item is weighed and sealed the day it is packed, so the box leaves us dry.

The Hummingbird Garden has four open compartments under a pale blue painted lid, holding kaju, badam, pista and akhrot side by side. It suits the OMR team box and visitors’ thamboolam alike: light to carry on a bus home, easy to share with the family, and the fill is visible the moment the lid lifts.

When should you order for Deepavali in Chennai?

Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Tamil Nadu the celebration is concentrated in the early morning, so boxes must be in hand the day before. We dispatch within three working days of the order being settled, and most cities receive it two to six days after. Allow about two weeks, and a little more in a heavy monsoon week.

Questions people ask

Can a small dry fruit box be used as thamboolam?

Yes, and many families now do it for close relatives. Our note on thamboolam return gifts with dry fruits covers quantities.

Will the monsoon delay a Deepavali delivery?

A heavy spell can slow couriers by a day or two, which is why we suggest settling the order slightly earlier for Chennai.

Can the card carry a Tamil greeting?

Yes. The card is written in your words, so a Deepavali greeting in Tamil goes in as you send it.

Can I order loose dry fruits in Chennai for bakshanam?

Yes. The page for buying dry fruits in Chennai lists the shelf and delivery details.
