Quick answer

For a long Bangalore office day, the desk snacks that work best are small, dry portions you pack at home: a handful of trail mix, a bowl of roasted makhana, or a spoon of seeds stirred into curd. Pack about 25–30 g a day in a closed box, and a week costs less than two canteen snacks while keeping you away from the vending machine at four o’clock.

We hear this request most from Bangalore. The day starts with a long ride to a tech park on Outer Ring Road, in Whitefield or in Electronic City, and ends with the same ride home. Lunch is early, dinner is late, and the gap in between is where the biscuits get eaten.

Why the gap between lunch and dinner is the problem

If you eat lunch at one and reach home at eight or later after the evening traffic, that is a long stretch with only filter coffee in it. Most people fill it with whatever is near the desk. The fix is not willpower. It is having something better already in your drawer.

Dry fruits and seeds suit a desk because they need no fridge, make no mess and do not smell up the floor. The one thing they need is a closed box, because an open packet on a desk soon goes soft in Bangalore’s damp air.

A five-day desk plan

Each portion is roughly 25–30 g, about a small closed handful. Nuts and trail mixes come to roughly 150 kcal at that size, so this is a snack, not a second lunch.

Day What goes in the box Portion When it works best
Monday Trail mix with nuts, raisins and berries About 30 g With the 4 pm coffee
Tuesday Roasted makhana with a pinch of salt and pepper About 20 g, a full bowl Long afternoon meetings
Wednesday Seed and muesli mix stirred into a cup of curd 2 tablespoons in the curd A late lunch, or mid-morning
Thursday Twelve-nut trail mix About 30 g Before the ride home
Friday Half makhana, half trail mix About 25 g in total Whenever the week runs late

What each one does at a desk

Trail mix

Trial Mix Fruit is the sweeter one, with more dried fruit, and suits people who crave something sweet after lunch. Trial Mix with 12 Nuts & Dry Fruits has more nuts and fills you up for longer, which helps before a long drive home. Pick one, or alternate them as the plan does.

Makhana

Makhana, or fox nut, is the lightest thing in the box. A full bowl weighs very little, so it suits people who like to keep nibbling through a call. Roast it at home in a dry pan, or with half a teaspoon of ghee, until it snaps, then season it. Makhana soaks up moisture faster than anything else here, so keep it in a screw-top box and pack only a day or two at a time.

Seeds and muesli mix

Muesli Mix (Seeds) is best stirred into curd from the canteen, or into a jar of curd from home if your office has a fridge. It adds crunch and makes a small cup of curd feel like a meal. Pumpkin, sunflower and flax seeds are all in there, so you do not have to buy each one.

Packing for the commute

  • Use a small steel or glass box with a tight lid. Zip bags get crushed in a laptop bag, and makhana turns to powder.
  • Pack the week on Sunday, except makhana, which you should top up mid-week.
  • Keep the big packs at home, in airtight jars. A large packet opened in the office goes soft within days.
  • If makhana goes chewy, dry-roast it for two minutes on a low flame and it snaps again.
  • Salt and spice go on at home. Seasoning on the surface goes stale faster once it is sitting in a drawer.

After lunch, many people keep a small box of mukhwas as well. If you have wondered what is in it, our guide on what mukhwas actually is explains the mixes.

Questions people ask

How much trail mix should I eat at my desk each day?

About 25–30 g, a small closed handful, is a sensible snack portion. Put it in a box rather than eating from the packet, which makes it easy to eat far more.

Why does my makhana go soft in the office?

Makhana soaks up moisture from the air quickly, and an open packet does not stand a chance in damp weather. Keep it in a screw-top box and re-roast it for a couple of minutes if it goes chewy.

Can I keep dry fruits in my office drawer for a week?

Yes, if they are in a closed box. Trail mix and seed mixes last the week easily. Makhana is best packed a couple of days at a time.

Is trail mix better than biscuits at 4 pm?

A portion of nuts gives you more protein and fibre than most biscuits, and far less added sugar. If you have a health condition, ask your doctor what suits you.
